Hello everyone my name is Edgar Valdez, UCSC Jack Baskin Alumni Class of 2015!

I am originally from Gonzales, CA and I was a first generation college student. I joined SHPE my freshman year at UCSC and I'll forever be grateful for the opportunities, support system, and resources I received. After earning my Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, I pursued a Master's degree in Astronautical Engineering at USC. Currently, I work for Northrop Grumman as a Systems Engineer and I hope to continue growing in my profession.

For fun I like to listen to music, travel, and spend time with friends and family. Oh, and by the way...I also enjoy learning about emerging technologies.

OAAKKESS!!!!! C/O 2015!!

Favorite Memory/Activity in SHPE?

I'll never forget making tamales while fundraising for our conferences. Having had the opportunity of attending National SHPE conferences is an experience I will always be grateful for!

How did SHPE contribute to your success?

SHPE provided resources that catered to my individual needs. As a first-generation college student / engineering major, I appreciated the exposure to alumni in the industry and the occasional tours at different companies. SHPE created a community of students that offered each other support and this allowed me to believe in my ability to be successful.

Any words of wisdom for incoming freshmen/transfer students?

Congratulations to all incoming and transfer engineering students, you've chosen a great major. During your academic journey you may find yourself feeling lost, confused or challenged -- this is normal! You are not alone! Connect with your peers when you need it and offer help when you can. Stick to it, be persistent, and you'll make it through.
